Autonomous Driving

Self-driving technology is advancing rapidly. Learn about the different levels of autonomy and how they work.

Autonomous Driving

SAE Automation Levels

L0

No Automation

Human does everything - steering, acceleration, braking. No automated assistance.

L1

Driver Assistance

Adaptive cruise control OR lane keep assist. Human monitors everything.

L2

Partial Automation

Combined steering AND acceleration. Human must monitor and be ready to take over.

L3

Conditional Automation

Car drives in specific conditions. Human must respond to takeover requests.

L4

High Automation

Full self-driving in specific areas (geofenced). No human needed in those areas.

L5

Full Automation

Complete autonomous operation anywhere. No steering wheel or pedals needed.

Sensors

Key Sensors Used

  • Cameras: 360° vision for lane detection, signs, pedestrians
  • LiDAR: Laser pulses for 3D mapping and object detection
  • Radar: Radio waves for detecting speed and distance
  • Ultrasound: Close-range detection for parking
Current Status

Current Status (2026)

  • Level 2: Widely available - Tesla, GM, Ford, BMW
  • Level 3: Limited - Mercedes in Germany, BMW in US
  • Level 4: Robotaxis - Waymo, Cruise in select cities
  • Level 5: Not yet achieved - still research phase
